Jerry Uelsmann

Before photoshop there was Jerry Uelsmann. His work challenges the viewer to separate from the way they normally examine photos. He would combine images in the darkroom to create these unique photos. Photographers today are still trying to master his technique.

I love that just when I feel I've figured out what's in the photo, I'm caught off guard. I find the surrealism in the photos appealing. His creativity and unique blending with his images continues to amaze me; they start a whirlwind of emotions. I could look at his photos all day.

And for some trivia: Uelsmann actually taught at UF in the 60s and 70s and currently lives in Gainesville with the artist Maggie Taylor.
