Hannah Maynard 1834-1912
This woman was incredibly ahead of her time. She was using multiple exposures, creating movement from a stationary image, and creating photo montages and busts. She's a great inspiration for her innovations and bravery in the Victorian era. Women in business were quite unexpected, and therefore she weathered much criticism.

Roy Lichtenstein
Roy Lichtenstein is an American pop artist who uses a comic book style. In 1961 Lichtenstein began his first Pop paintings using cartoon images and techniques derived from the appearance of commercial printing. This phase would continue to 1965 and included the use of advertising imagery suggesting consumerism and homemaking. His work features thick outlines and Benday dots to represent certain colors, as if created by photographic reproduction.

Jerry Uelsmann
Before photoshop there was Jerry Uelsmann. His work challenges the viewer to separate from the way they normally examine photos. He would combine images in the darkroom to create these unique photos. Photographers today are still trying to master his technique.
I love that just when I feel I've figured out what's in the photo, I'm caught off guard. I find the surrealism in the photos appealing. His creativity and unique blending with his images continues to amaze me; they start a whirlwind of emotions. I could look at his photos all day.
And for some trivia: Uelsmann actually taught at UF in the 60s and 70s and currently lives in Gainesville with the artist Maggie Taylor.

Elizabeth Murray
She is not a photographer but her style of painting and her use of shapes in her paintings are very inspiring. She does not limit herself to a square or circular canvas and her works are usually quirky in my opinion, and as a whole tell a narrative. I feel photography works the same way that one image can tell a whole possibility of stories and that the photographer shouldn't limit themselves to what is considered "normal" like a portrait of a family smiling. As a painting major I want my work to have a style like hers do.

Loretta Lux
I really enjoy the work of Loretta Lux. She photographs her friends children and digitally places them in front of background (photos she has taken from her travels or paintings she has created). She has a really strong aesthetic and despite most of her work being digital, I thought her work could still be relevant for this class (i.e. composition, location). Here is her website http://www.lorettalux.de/
Sophie Calle
Sophie Calle is an excellent example of an artist that makes her life part of the bigger picture, from the Chromatic Diet to working as a chamber maid, she makes it easy to create her work because she lives it each day. When her boyfriend recently broke up with her via email she made a piece involving the email.
